Vinyl or wood? Choosing a privacy fence for Kentucky weather

Both make a good privacy fence. The difference is what you want to do on a Saturday in five years.

Most of the privacy fences we build around Franklin and Bowling Green are either white vinyl or pine. Customers often ask which one is better. The honest answer is that both work well when they are installed right. The real question is how much upkeep you want and what look you are after.

Vinyl: privacy without the maintenance

Vinyl privacy fence uses solid tongue-and-groove panels, so it blocks sightlines evenly along the whole line. It does not need staining or sealing. An occasional wash with soap and water keeps it looking new, and PVC resists rot, insects and the moisture we get in Kentucky.

Vinyl does depend on a careful install. If posts are too shallow or spaced unevenly, panels sag and sections shift. We set posts to depth and keep spacing and alignment consistent so the line stays straight through the seasons.

Wood: warmth, character and options

Wood gives a yard warmth, and it can be built to almost any height or style: solid privacy, shadowbox or a classic picket. We build mostly in pine for its value and availability, and offer cedar, which resists moisture and insects naturally and looks more refined.

Wood moves with the weather. Humidity, rain and freeze cycles make boards expand and contract, so wood benefits from periodic staining or sealing. Done on schedule, that protection adds years to the fence.

Vinyl asks almost nothing of you. Wood asks for a little care and gives you more character in return.

How to choose

  • Want the least upkeep possible: vinyl.
  • Want a natural look or a custom style: wood, pine or cedar.
  • Fencing a long run on a budget: pine is usually the most economical.
  • Not sure: we will walk the property with you and talk it through before you decide.

Either way, every installation carries a one-year workmanship warranty on top of the manufacturer’s coverage on materials.
